Five years ago I had my garage converted into an extra room. This new room was well insulated, and has the standard four walls and a sloping roof, all plastered out. We are now seeing around 20 spots where the plaster is becoming detached from the nail heads which fix the nails through the plaster boards into (I assume) the new joists. I'm disappointed that nails (they seem to be galvanised clout nails, either 35mm or 65mm long) were used rather than plasterboard screws, but there you go). An article I kept from a national newspaper some time ago suggests that the problem arose either because new timber used for the joists is drying out, forcing the nails to push out; or that the plaster used to skim the surfaces does not easily allow it to adhere to the nails' surface. They recommend hammering the nails through the plasterboards, then starting again with the correct screws then patching up, but I'm unsure which way to go. Advice would be gratefully received!
