Plasterboarding on garage wall to cover brickwork

by Gooner10076 » Sun Jan 01, 2023 4:19 pm

Hi I would like to plasterboard on my garage wall which is uncovered brick. There are some bricks where there doesn't look to be mortar in between the bricks, not sure if this was deliberate (peepholes) or shoddy workmanship. Should I fill in the gaps or is it ok just to apply a PVA primer and then plasterboard on top.
Thanks in advance

Hi gooner10076,
If you have a single skin of bricks forming your garage, you should not use plasterboard because damp will get into the plaster core and the boards will disintegrate.
Which method you use to improve the internal appearance will depend on the intended use.

Hi thanks for the reply. The bricks used are called monomur, that is the French name anyway. they are approx 35.cm in thickness. The outside walls are covered in cladding. Would the damp still be an issue in that case?

Hi gooner10076,
It's difficult to give you a definitive answer.
Suggest you buy 1 sheet of foil backed plasterboard, lean it against the wall for a few days, remove it and see if the wall is wet. If there is no serious problem you could use moisture resistant plasterboard.
Regards S
