Painting Moulded Doors with Paint or Varnish

by Raul_breganzo » Wed Oct 21, 2015 2:12 pm

Hi

I like the colour of the original moulded doors I've bought. However we need to paint it to protect it from wearing.. What should we paint the door with e,g, can you paint clear varnish on moulded doors?

There is no reason why you cannot paint a clear varnish on moulded doors. There is a iink here to some really good varnish which will do the job nicely https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/DIY-superst ... litre.html

Thanks!

I've been recommended a few different polyurethane varnishes. Is there any preference to manufacturers e.g. Rustins, Blackfriars and the usual ones like Ronseal etc?

Hi

Most varnishes do tend to be much of a muchness so any should be fine, but the Rustins and Blackfriars do tend to be slightly higher quality

Hope this helps

Hi,

The Blackfriars polyurethane varnish didn't go on too well on the moulded doors! Are you sure varnish can be applied to moulded doors that are primed?

Nobody said anything about them being already painted! Your opening line was " I like the colour of the original moulded doors I've bought" I just assumed you liked the colour of the timber and wanted to maintain it and protect it with varnish.

No, varnish is not good on what you say is primer. Use a good quality paint and you will not need to harden or protect it with varnish.

Sorry, I thought moulded doors come standard as primed! :-(
So, I guess I'll need to sand the door down now?

Not in all cases no they don't. Yes, you will need to sand off the varnish, re-prime and then paint with a good quality paint
