Can I use a product like ku-rust to treat the rust on a cast iron fireplace and then spray it with fireplace paint or Have I got to remove all rust first and then sray?

It depends on how much rust,if the rust has eaten into the metal then sand blasting is needed. With any rust treatment product you need to remove all loose rust and any dirt or oil.The best tool is a wire brush or a rotary wire brush that fits on an angle grinder which is quicker and does a better job than by hand. Some paints can react to chemical rust treatment,do a test piece first.
