Building a Brick Bread Oven and Soft Fired Bricks

by johnorford » Sat Aug 20, 2016 9:58 am

This relates to a project to build a simple bread oven - not the beautiful dome shape of old, but not much more than a pile of bricks. There are designs for these on-line, but my question concerns the bricks. I live far from the UK and the only bricks available locally are soft-fired. If I use these, will they disintegrate under heat? - can they be re-fired by heating the oven slowly? Cement blocks of any sort aren't suitable - the bricks must retain heat, as the fire is lit, then racked out and the bread put in a clean oven.
Trial and error is a possibility, but any test other than a full ones might be inconclusive and a full one is rather expensive.
I'd be grateful for anyone with knowledge or experience to help me here.
