Shower Tile Repairs for Tiles Coming off Wall at the Base

by Andrewi16 » Sun Sep 11, 2016 8:35 pm

We've just stopped using our shower as the tiles round the bottom have started coming away from the wall. Having investigated, I'm not quite sure where to start...

The shower tiles are the mosaic type ones. We've been here a couple of years, and had a plumber round soon after moving in to do a number of jobs, including putting some new sealant round the bottom where they join the shower tray. A few weeks ago we noticed some of the bottom row were coming away so stopped using the shower.

I've just pulled away the silicon, and it's clear there's been some repair work before. Some of the individual tiles were held on to the substrate with silicon rather than adhesive / grout, and there are places where the grout is clearly part of a repair. More worryingly, on one side of the shower it's wood behind and it's clearly damp and gone soft.

Re-gluing and grouting tiles was something I was up for. With the damp behind I'm less sure...! but what sort of specialist should I turn to?

Many thanks in advance.

It sound like your grout has started to fail. This will allow water through to walls underneath. If the walls are plasterboard, it is very likely they will need repairing.
