Firstly a bit of background.....
We recently moved into a house , that had Kardean flooring throughout the downstairs. Looks lovely in the kitchen and hallway but we didn’t like it in our lounge - was grey and looked a bit cold - as well as the dog turned into a 'bambi on ice' on it :-)
We decided to replace with carpet, and went to a well known carpet retailer and when booking the estimator to come out, asked if we needed to remove the flooring or could they lay carpet on top of the existing kardean floor. He was adamant it needed to be removed for a couple of reasons, so we booked the estimator and went home to start pulling up the floor. The actual 'tiles' came up with a bit of effort but we managed it but when we tackled the middle of the room, the adhesive / mortar ( or whatever it is called :-)) started to come up in places. So it was back to concrete in places but mostly the adhesive was still infact.
When the estimator arrived, he couldn’t believe we had lifted the floor , and said that they absolutely could have laid carpet over the kardean, but now we were in a position where we absolutely had to remove all of the adhesive to level the floor . Suffice to say we are not happy with the original advice given, and given the situation we now find ourselves in we could quite easily throttle the sales advisor - but hey ho we are where we are.
Soooo.. we have started to get the adhesive up but it is horrendously difficult there are 2 of us doing it and it is a really slow and painful process - we are using lump hammers and chisels but it is solid in places and it is pretty soul destroying, as well as now having very sore and painful hands .
Please please can anyone advise if there is an easier way to tackle this - it is a large room and we still have about 1/3 of the floor to tackle , with only 5 days left before the new carpet is fitted ( and we both work full time). Any recommendations in regards to tools / techniques we should be trying would be gratefully received.
Sorry for war and peace, but I am in so much pain this morning, and just can see how we are ever going to get this done, if we continue the way we are going !
