What is This Wall Socket or Switch Fitting

Am currently decorating my new house. And come across this wall fitting. I have no idea what its for and to me has no function. Can any know what this is for or point me in the right direction. Am completely baffled as i have never seen one before.

Sorry I have no idea what the socket is for. I would use cable tester to see if it is live and then go from their.

I wonder if a very old fuse connection unit?
