UB Alternative Options for Cottage Dormer

by Colw » Sun Dec 17, 2017 10:19 am

Hi

I’m putting a dormer in the roof of an old cottage. The engineer has specified that I have to instal a 203x106 UB in the attic floor. He has recommend two build options. 1) Build he beam into the floor by cutting through all the the joists and fixing it down the middle and reattached the joists or 2) putting under the joists (leaving visible in room below)

It is an old small cottage both with narrow floors which just may take the beam and also the rooms have restricted height. If we instal under the joists it will cut the room below, visually I don’t really mind but it will on leave about 203 head height clearance.

My query is.. after there any other options available. He said sistering is not an option nor flitch beams or would it be worthwhile getting a second opinion

Thanks in advance

Colin
