Replacing Skirting Boards but Keeping Carpet Kitchens, doors, rails, stud, tables, chairs, stair cases, garden furniture etc... Find answers and ask questions here!

Hi everyone!

First post here :)

We’ve just bought a new build home and I HATE the skirting boards. Sounds stupid but I do, they aren’t all nice and curved but rather very rectangular!

I’ve found lots of YouTube videos and I want to have a go at replacing them in one room to see if I’m any good. If it’s rubbish I’ll get a professional in but I’m pretty handy so hope it will go well.

The thing I can’t find much info on is keeping the carpets when replacing the skirting boards. Will I need to lift the carpets in order to switch the baseboard out?

Any help you could give would be AMAZING!

You won't have to take the carpet up completely. Just lift it of the grip strip along the longes wall an a little round each corner, replace that skirting board, repeat for the next wall and replace the carpet along the longest wall and into the corner where you have replaced the skirting board, do the other wall , put the carpet back leaving the corners where you have the old skirting, do the last wall.

You will need to paint or finish the new skirting before putting it in place, then touch up when it's down

Lastly decide if it looks OK or not. You will probably need to rent or buy a knee kicker and tucker to replace the carpet.

Personally I would not lift the carpet completely as I would not be able to fit it as well as a professional fitter.
