Help needed with rewiring a new light with 3 cables

by Ukjaney » Sat Jun 23, 2018 11:12 am

Hello,
I have brought a new light and as far as I can see I have wired it correctly.
I started by turning the switxh off at the fuse box and taken a photo of the old light and cables. The new light has 3 wires-E,N,L and the ceiling wires have 3 earth cables which I have connceted to E. I have found the switch light and connected it to the L (brown) I knew this was the switch cable as it had tape on it and referred to the old photo.
I connected the 3 red wires to a 5 amp connector block. I then connected the 2 black wires to the N (blue) but the light still won't go on.
Have I missed something here as I have tightened all the screws and ensured no wires are exposed?
Thanks in advance

From what you have said everything should work........providing you switched the mains back on.

You should also check all the other lights on the same floor, just to see do they work. (Switch them on and off) The reason is, you have typical loop in wiring, and if any other lights do NOT work the problem is at the light you have changed.
Assuming you have switched the electricity back on, and the other lights work it I would suggest one of three possibilities.

1) The connections to the new light are wrong, in that you have clamped the insulation, not the conductor.

2) There is a problem with the switch.

3) The new light has failed.

To check 3, you could put a piece of flex to the light and a plugtop on the other end and plug it in. (Take it down from the ceiling first)

Thank you for your reply. I tried the
other bedroom light and that doesn't work so it must be the new light. That will be going back to the shop! :)

You seem to have misread what I said.

I said
if any other lights do NOT work the problem is at the light.

I never said it is the light.

Since the other lights do not work, it is something to do with your connections. I am also presuming the "switch wire" is BLACK ?

I would take the wires out of the connector strip you used (Wago connectors are better) and make sure you have not got a broken wire or connected to the insulation.
Obviously usual precautions apply.
