Advice on Decking Support and Hanging off of Existing Garden Wall

by Grayy » Tue Jul 17, 2018 7:35 pm

Hi

If anyone can answer some or all of the queries I have that would be a great help, thanks in advance.

1)
I'm planning on building a wooden deck for the Garden which will be around 5M by 3 or 4M. The Garden is 5M wide and as the boards are available in 4.8M lengths I'm wondering if attaching Ledgers (using joist hangers) to each of the Garden walls would be a suitable option with Posts in between of course. Would most garden walls be strong enough?

2)
The other thing is there is a brick flower bed that is around 400-500mm high, could I use this as support to save on the amount of posts I need to use?
The wood would be ok directly on top of the brick right?

3)
If a deck is sitting around 500mm high how deep should the posts be sunk?
4)
How far apart should the posts be? I'd guess every 1 to 1.2 Meteres?

5)
Also any advice on the size of posts and joists would help, i'm only just starting out preparing for this and am not so familiar with the common sizes used for a deck frame, I'd guess the posts should be 3 by 3 or 4 by 4 with joists at least 4 by 2?
