light fittings / double gang switches

by keirk » Wed Aug 29, 2007 10:11 am

Hi guys,

In my dining room I have a over head light and a light outside the french doors. With one single switch by the door into the dining room and a double switch by the french doors for the dining room light and the light outside above the french doors.

Yesterday I purchased a light fitting from ikea and thought it an easy job to fit it .. on taking down the old light fitting I was faced with 3 cables rather than one - and I made the novice mistake of taking down the rose (without noting the cables) and connected black to black etc - of course this blew the fuse ....

So I read up on DIY doctor and reconnected this morning - and it nearly works but the outside light won't turn off ... the single switch works and the switch for the overhead light in the dining works on the double switch - but the switch for the outside light doesn't

The switch cable seems to be a 3core + e with a blue, red, yellow & earth - I connected the blue to the dining room overhead light and the yellow the live loop.... where did i go wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Keir

hi, Keirk
is the light in the room 2 way switched from 1 gang & one half of the 2 gang switches?
If so then check the 2 way works fully from both sides of room ie on @ one , off at other and all combinations cause i don't think so.
at double sw. how many wires ? if only 1-3core & earth plus 1-2core & earth then one answer if only 1 - 3core/E then not 2 way & other answer....what is normal operation of lights .
I will try to help but need to know what wires are in single sw. by door also
regards SPARX
