Light Now Always on After Swapping Fittings?

I swapped the old bayonet light fitting with a LED lamp but now the light is always on.

That is probably because you have connected it to Live and neutral, not Switched live an neutral.

There is also the slight possibility that it is connected right and you have "induction" which is just enough to light the lamp.

Put the old lamp back and see what happens.

I don't have the old fitting anymore, it was really old and just disintegrated as I took it off!
What other troubleshooting can I do or best to call an electrician?

If you (or any one else reading this) is unsure what to do, then the best thing is to get a competent person in to do the job for you. It does NOT have to be a qualified electrician.
