Replacing Old 2 Gang Switch to New Switch

by gawdzilla » Wed Aug 29, 2018 5:33 am

original wiring

Hi all, this is the old wiring, i realized the electrician did a shoddy job as all the wires are red. I have tried and I know that switching the top 2 wires affects which switch button turns on the lights. (i.e. the left switch button -> room, right witch button -> hallway, if i switch the top 2 wires, left switch button -> hallway, right switch button-> room)

I have no idea why the electrician connected the bottom 2 holes.

I want to change this old switch to this new switch.. would really appreciate some help on how to wire it..

The wiring diagram for your new switch shows a neutral is required.
You do not have a neutral at your old switch (There is no need for one)
Using this fact, your new switch is not compatible.

Using a "normal" 2 gang (2 way) switch would work, since it requires no neutral. I can only guess your new switch is either a "smart switch" or has a "light" of some description.

in short, no. You could get an electrician in to re wire it, but i would say the cost would be OTT.
If it helps people often make a similar mistake
