Hi all, new to the forum and hoping to find a solution to my problem as I am struggling to resolve elsewhere so hoping someone can help.

I am in the process of raising the joist height in a 1970's property I have purchased which currently has 4" x 2" joists to accommodate more insulation. I need the new joists to butt up against the existing ones so need the same size as I will be boarding on top. Having spent a couple of weekends trying to hunt down the right size, it would appear that modern 4" x 2" or 47mm x 100mm is actually 45mm x 95mm which causes me an issue

Does anyone know anywhere either down south or that will deliver down south where I can purchase graded timber of this old school size please?

You need to contact a timber merchant and special order the finished size you want. Not difficult if you want a lot, not inexpensive if you just want a few. Probably at least 3 to 4 times more expensive than a standard size.

FWIW 2" x 4" has never been the standard finished size, it has always been the size before planning and thicknessing so if imperial it is around 1¾ x 3¾

Im in West Wales but our local saw mill here, Esgair estate, will cut timber to any spec and its no more expensive than buying off the shelf in Travis Perkins or similar. As an eg a 4.8m length of 6x2 is approx £10, thats in Douglas or Larch.

It pays to shop around and play suppliers off each other
