Hi all, I hope this is the right forum for this question.

I'm currently trying to redecorate the bathroom. I won't go into the torrid history of why I need to repair things like cracked caulk and unfinished paint work but that's by the by. At the moment I'm working on the window frame and trying to work out how to remove a residue, the origins of which is a mystery to me. I've removed the caulk but there's also a very wide layer of hard clear substance which is not coming away easily. Hopefully I can include pictures to illustrate what I mean.

Anyway, I may be able to scrape it off but I don't think I'll be able to do so without damaging the frame.

Any advice?

Hi Mouse,

I've had a similar issue with years old sealant on an exterior frame.
I ended up buying an oscillating multi tool to cut the sealant away, and found that the scraper blade included worked to chip away the old rock hard gunk.
Where access is limited I've also removed by hand scraper, then used a fine scouring pad (scotchbrite etc) to remove scratches you will inevitably create.

You could try silicone eater to soften it up, but it sounds like it could be superglue/mitre bond? In which case mechanical method may be only solution.
