Wall fan not Working With Added Indicator Light

by laurencewithau » Sat Jan 12, 2019 2:23 pm

Hi. I have a Vent Axia lo-carbon HTP quadra wall fan in the shower room. It has a pull cord and timer. But no indicator light to say that the fan is off and the timer on.If the fan is running and I forget whether I switched it off, I do not know if it is the timer running or the fan is still switched on. So I bought a T 85 250v AC 10amp red neon panel power indicator. I cut a piece out of the side of the fan housing and installed the light. I wired it to the switch live and the permanent live, exactly the same as the pull cord switch wiring. The light works but the fan does not switch off. I would guess that the timer is always on. Anyway, is there any way I can wire an indicator light with the fan working normally.? I did try a tiny LED light but its two wires were too thin to be connected to the terminals.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First things first.
You said you wired the neon "to the switch live and the permanent live"
It should be across switched live and neutral, this will mean it will come on and stay on everytime the switch is in the on position.

There is no guarantee this will work as the neon will "leak" and may constantly restart your timer.

If you just want to know is a pull cord switch on or off I suggest you buy a shower pull cord switch, one that has a physical indicator. Some have a little "flag" that become proud and says "on" some have an internal wheel, which rotates to show either on or off.

Hi Mr White.
Thanks very much for that. I'll rewire it in the way you suggested. Or get a separate switch. Thanks again.
