Have fitted new light in bedroom. Also wanted to replace old metal switch
with new metal one . However when i removed old one there was no earth
so i put a plastic switch on am i correct in thinking that metal switch must be earthed also when i turn light on there is a slight delay before it lights

Hi yes you are correct about sw. as for delay what type of light is fitted?
low energy are slow as are some low voltage transformer lamps to prevent surge damaging lamp or tripping MCB's
