We have had a disaster... We didnt realise we had to water down the paint before putting it on new plaster and now the walls are beginning to flake, can anyone let us know what we need to do??

Strip off the old paint as it wont stay there anyway. See our paint stripping project.

Firstly i would take out all the loose bits, if the holes a small the fill them if not the it will have to be skimmed again, when painting on new plaster you should;

1. Seal the plaster either by giving it a coat of PVA or giving it a coat of slightly watered down emulsion

2. Know for the first 12 months of new plaster it needs to breath, so get a breathable paint i recommend "Macfersons" mixed in the "Eclipse", this is a good qaulity at a good price.

What paint did you use? May sound a daft question but believe me it's not.

Docs right though in the final analysis - it'll probably all have to come off.

When you repaint mistcoat (80-90% paint / 10-20% water depending on the paint) it first using matt emulsion of the same type as you'll use for the following coats. Personally I always use Dulux Trade Supermatt or Trade Vinyl Matt. Don't touch Dulux Richmatt with a bargepole for new plaster - it'll fall off just like you have experienced - oh is that what you used?

If you must use PVA (I really can't understand the national obsession with the blasted stuff) please thin it right down with water first or you'll only get a nice, thick, sticky surface coat that will - peel off!
