Electric Car Charger Mains Supply Cable

by Nosmo King » Thu Aug 29, 2019 1:49 am

Hi there,
I have gone a bought an electric car. I would like to charge it home and have got quotes from a couple of suppliers. They all say they will run a cable from the mains distribution box along the front of the house and then along to the side next to the driveway where they will install the charger. The mains supply box is at the front of the house and the CB box is in the hall behind the front door. Now Mrs King is not too happy with the idea of this power cable being tacked along the front of the house and I think she has a valid point. It will look bad. Is there any way this cable can be hidden from view?
Another thought is that I have a double plug socket in the garage - can this be easily converted to take 40amps? That would solve the need to run the cable as proposed.
Appreciate some advice. Thanks

In reverse order.

A double socket can only supply upto 13A
Also what is the rating of the protective device that supplies the garage? I assume it is on its own consumers unit? If it isn't and the sockets are supplied from the house the answer is as previously stated.

In plain English the cable your charger will need is at least the same size as a big electric shower (10mm) so unless you want it run indoors on your skirting board, out side it is then.

You could of course dig a trench lay a 4 inch pipe and let them pull the cable through that.

If all else fails, sell the car.

To get the government incentives you have to use a registered installer and he is forced to follow laid out guide lines.

It has nothing to do with common sense, so only person who can help is the guy installing it.

I am going to use a registered installer and I'm sure he will follow laid out guidelines but what we don't want is a big black cable arbitrarily tacked across the front of the house.

I want to see if there are any options to conceal the cable routing.
