Advice Needed on Strengthening Loft Floor for Storage

by Gordon Hill » Tue Jan 28, 2020 11:53 am

Advice please!
I have a typical 1930s semi detached with a hip roof. The central wall is solid. The existing joists in the loft are 3" x 2" and span from the central wall to the outside wall plate, about 12ft. The joists are at 14" centres.
Although there is no problem, I want to strengthen things up before I board for storage. My plan was to screw & glue 63mm x 89mm on top of the existing joists. However, there are 4" x 2" binders about halfway along the span! If I just beef up the floor from the centre to the binders, will that increase the load bearing? The binders are below the purlins so would it also make sense to connect them to each other at regular intervals?
Any suggestions please!
