Anyone know how I change this spotlight bulb?

by nrs_90 » Sat Apr 11, 2020 12:54 pm

A few of my spotlights have started flickering so I'm trying to change them. The spotlight didn't have a spring retaining clip around the bulb but I was able to pry out the spotlight from the ceiling with a flat screwdriver.

Problem is, I'm now having a bit of a difficult time working out how to replace the bulb in this spotlight.. Unscrewing the front just causes the glass to fall out.

I guess I have three questions..
What do I need to actually replace here?
How do I replace it
Where can I source it? (no idea where to look!)

Many thanks!!

What do I need to actually replace here?

Everything after the connector block if the unit is faulty, I would remove, and put on a plug to see if it still flickers before replacing as electronic switches can also cause flicker, often no fault with either unit, just don't work with each other.

How do I replace it

Undo three wires at connector block

Where can I source it? (no idea where to look!)

Google AC220V 3000K 60deg 6W down lighter then click on images, there are 1000's. Select likely replacement then look further to see if will fit hole.

Personally I hate 2" spot lights, and I would select a surface mount unit around 5", but if you want spot lights then GU10 is the way I would go.

Thank you! So I measured the ceiling "cut out" (60mm) and the total width of the downlight (80mm)..

I then went on a hunt to find the correct downlight with:
- 3000K colour temperature
- A 60mm cut out
- 22V AC
- 6W
- roughly the same colour (although by this point though I'm not too worried about the colour)

It's been an absolute mission trying to find the correct downlight with these specs! I've found this one: https://www.simplelighting.co.uk/recess ... te-finish/

Do you think it will work? Looks very different to my current one plus its 240v AC. I also have the option of adding either a 5W or 7W bulb.. which one should I go for? (The original was 6W). Not sure whether to go slightly under or over.

Thanks again!

You are slightly confusing yourself.
The 22v is the voltage for the actual lamp, the replacements you have found are 240v. Your mains supply is 240. There will be no problem since you will have to change the whole light fitting.

Also you do not need a fitting that requires a 60mm cut out, the light fitting bezel will cover any discrepancies. (Within reason, I have just been looking at some that are 57mm)

Ericmark is suggesting that you buy lamp fittings that will accept GU10 lamps, the idea being that when one fails you can change just the lamp not the whole fitting, I have just seen some that require a 56mm cut out.

As for colour temperature and wattage, that is personal choice, since you can not (easily) alter the number of lights you have.

Sorry, this was a typo. I meant to write 220V.

Also you do not need a fitting that requires a 60mm cut out, the light fitting bezel will cover any discrepancies.

Thanks. Just to clarify.. when you say that I don't need a fitting that requires a 60mm cut out - do you mean I can go lower (within reason). Obviously going higher would mean I'd need a larger cut out?

The main issue I'm having is finding a unit with the same colour/finish as all my other downlights (brushed chrome), which also has a 60mm cutout.

The downlight I posted earlier should : https://www.simplelighting.co.uk/recess ... te-finish/
looks like a good match.. 60mm cutout and brushed chrome finish and I'll get the 5W warm wight GU10 LED with it. This fitting should allow me to change the bulb in the future and not the whole unit..

I wanted to know if there's anything obviously incorrect I'm doing here - given the specs of my previous downlight and the new downlight that I'm purchasing...

I'm a complete novice!

Thanks again.

All looks good to me.
At that price I would buy enough to change all your lights as and when they fail (Buy the lamps later, in case you don't like the one you buy for this fitting)

Yes, you can buy lights that are slightly smaller as the bezel covers the differance.

That looks like a G5.3 converted to GU10, in the main GU10 bulb is held in place with the bayonet connection of the GU10, you have a little rubber sucker to change them with, but the one you show the bulb is retained with a circlip so you drop bulb and holder through hole then remove bayonet socket, this is not normal.

Hi ericmark.. are you saying this unit won't be suitable?
And just to clarify - we're talk about this unit, correct? : https://www.simplelighting.co.uk/recess ... te-finish/

It will be fine.
ericmark is saying that the one you propose to use has a "circlip" holding in the lamp, which is unusual for a GU10 fitting, as GU10 lamps are usually held in by the fact the lamp has a bayonet fitting.

Yours has "belt and braces"
