Wiring Help Replacing old T6360 Thermostat with a Smart thermostat

by naterac » Fri May 08, 2020 1:36 pm

Hi all,

I'm replacing my old Honeywell T6360B thermostat with a new smart thermostat and i need help with the wiring.

I think i need to do the following:
1- Brown wire connected to the far right terminal on the Honeywell thermostat goes in terminal 4 in the new thermostat
2- Blue wire connected to terminal 2 in the honeywell (second from the left) goes in terminal 3 in the smart thermostat.

Now, connecting the cables to the dry contacts is where i'm not sure (my best guess is that black goes in 2 and 1 should also be connected to the blue cable?), my boiler is a Worcester combi gas boiler in case that helps.

Can someone help please?

thanks,

Hi naterac
No.. assuming nothing silly has been done with the wiring, your steps 1 and 2 are correct as is the black wire with the brown sleeve going to terminal 2, however you then need to fit a shunt between 4 and 1. If there is no earth terminal in the new stat just tuck the wire, with a bit of insulating tape on the end, inside the case.

It does seem the new thermostat is for under floor heating, terminals 5 and 6 would connect to a sensor to stop floor getting too hot, as said your line and neutral are correct, and there will be a link line to either 1 or 2 and black wire to the other terminal.

Do be aware the wall thermostats job is to stop the boiler cycling in the summer, and with a wifi linked one also it can be used for geofencing, however for a boiler to work efficiently the return water needs to be cooler than 40°C, if you switch whole boiler on/off each time it switches on it runs flat out, until the return water heats up, and then it tends to over shoot, so you don't get the latent heat the boiler is designed to extract, so room temperature should be controlled with the thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) and you can now get reasonably cheap electronic programmable heads, the eQ-3 is a good example, at less than £10 I got the bluetooth version for £15, these gradually adjust water flow, so the return water gradually heats up or cools down and the boiler flame hight auto adjusts to suit (modulates). This allows the boiler to extract the latent heat.

I use a smart wall thermostat, but also a programmable TRV head in the same room set just slightly lower to the wall thermostat, so the TRV head does the controlling first, and only when weather warms up does the wall thermostat turn off.

There are linked systems like evohome, tado, wiser and hive, but the TRV heads are around £50 so I simply set the same schedule on the TRV and wall thermostat, and that seems to work nearly as good.

Fab, thanks! - Just one additional thing, english is not my native language and i am not familiar with the concept of a shunt in an electrical context. A quick search tells me that "In electronics, a shunt is a device that creates a low-resistance path for electric current, to allow it to pass around another point in the circuit.", which sounds like a plain wire, is that right? are you telling me to place a regular piece of wire between 4 and 1? or is a shunt something else? if so, can you explain please?

Thanks!

Hi naterac
Apologies just connect the two with a piece of insulated wire, in an ideal world it should be brown.
