Ball valve in loft tank, valve or washer replacing? All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

HI, noticed that there is a little water coming from the downpipes near the edge of the roof, not a lot is coming out and it is only running out at some point during the night not at any point during the day or when any of the taps/toilet/shower are used. Had look at the tank in the loft, there is a slight trickle of water coming from out of the bottom of the valve roughly where the washer would be at a guess (pic attached of it) – the ball on the end of the valve arm seems fine, isn't cracked or filled with water itself so I'm guessing the washer or valve itself needs replacing?

Probably not worth messing about fitting a new washer. Replace the valve by undoing the nut inside the tank and fitting a new one. The float can be reused.

guess it just a case of getting a 2 part valve to replace it, with correct sized pipe, is there any favoured or unflavoured brands to go with? Noticed there's Flomasta and Peglar that seemed popular

It doesn't really matter but I'd go for a part 1 type exactly the same as the existing.

Will have a look at those – one last layman question, pipe that the valve goes onto looks like it's about 20-22mm (hard to get an exact measurement given the loft space!) so would I be looking for a 1/2 or 3/4 valve to fit on there?

Hi dagdave,
You don't need to touch the pipes outside the tank - grip the valve body and undo the valve body nut.

Replaced the valve (front half, not the entire unit!) with no real problems, except for lack of space in a very small loft! Thanks for the advice on this thread in here.
