Replacing broken slates on a pitched roof with lead clips?

by Tsunami_Sue » Fri Jun 12, 2020 1:20 pm

Please can an experienced roofer advise?

Roofer took off my broken slates. They cut some other slates down to size, and slotted these into the old slates' places. No nails used anywhere.

They then hand bended "lead clips" and and slotted these on the underside of the replaced slates, to keep them in place. It makes the new slates raised compared to the other ones. I can easily pull these out and pull the slates out without problems.

It just doesn't seem very sturdy/solid, I'm worried these replaced slates might just fall/drop out over time.

Is this how slate replacements are meant to be done? Advice please!

Hi tsunami_sue.
When individual slates are replaced without stripping the roof above there is little option but to do what your roofer has done. Either lead clips or copper studs can be used but either way there is only one central fixing.

Thank you for your response. The roofer didn’t use any fixing though? He just slotted a tile and then raised it up with a piece of lead (slid under). Anyway the roof is leaking...

Is it possible that I put flash and around the new tiles - so they are secured to the slates around it? I know it won’t look good but at this point I just want to stop leak. Help much appreciated.

Hi tsunami_sue
The pieces of lead you can see will probably be nailed to the boarding/battens under the tile itself.
It sounds like you have more issues with your slates beyond a few replaced tiles. The solution will depend on whether you have conventional slates where there are 3 layers of overlapping tiles or modern 'slates' where there is only one layer and they interlock.
Sorry but it is difficult to advise without further information but I doubt flashing around the new tiles will solve the issue.
