Help with hard wax oil gone wrong!

by Meci20 » Tue Sep 29, 2020 2:42 pm

Hi, we've been renovating our Victorian floorboards. We sanded according to instructions from a friend who'd done their floors beautifully. We then followed another recommendation and decided to use fiddes hardwax oil in rustic oak as a finish. We were expecting some imperfections but the floors look an absolute mess with weird black marks and patterns everywhere. Some of this may be due sanding quality and also not great application (we've done one coat so far with a microfibre cloth - the oil was too thick for applying with a brush). Now we're a bit at a loss as to what to do. We're trying white spirit and wire wool to try and even out some of the darker patches but it's a thankless task. How easy would it be to resand and apply something else? Any other options? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi meci20
Sorry to give you the bad news but even with resanding it it unlikely you will remove all the dark patches. Do not use any solvents because these will make the black penetrate even deeper into the wood grain. You will probably have to end up with a dark coloured floor.
Regards S
