Garage door paint and getting a smooth finish

by Damodamo » Wed Sep 30, 2020 2:19 pm

I want to repeat a previously sprayed garage door. Is is a terrible idea to use spray paint to get an even finish? If so what is the best paint to use to get a great smooth finish. I've tried Hammerite elsewhere and it's tricky. Any suggestions would very welcome.

Hi damodamo
You could try using car spray cans but it will be difficult to spray such a large area. You will also have to try a small area to check compatibility with the existing paint. Failing this buy/hire a spray kit.

Thank you. I was thinking of using ordinary paint (from a pot) and a fine brush to avoid brush marks. Is that doable?

Hi damodamo
If the existing finish is the original spray finish paint you must try small areas to check compatibility. Some doors are coated with a plasticised paint which is a pig to overpaint.
Certainly you could try a brush finish but it will always look like a brush finish.
