Managed to damage shower/fan switch so decided to move and extend cable, checked unit by using part of the existing wire and all was ok, but when I extended the cable by about 1mt, fan and light came on whether the switch was on or off!

If it was working as it should before the cable was damaged, and now it will not turn off after you have extended the cable then I should say you have wired it wrong, but as you do not give any further information, it is hard to know what your error is, but it sounds like you have connected two wires to the same terminal.
