Building a hearth

by dave00 » Tue Aug 28, 2007 11:29 am

I have recently opened up an old fireplace and I intend to fit a woodburning stove. My problem is that building regs require that a new hearth must extend out 300mm from the front of the wood burner. This means that a new hearth will now have to cover the floor boads. I would like to make a brick hearth but I do not know how to fix the bricks onto the floorboards. Can any one help please?

I would forget the brick hearth get a slab or granit and place it over the existing hearth and extend it to the 300 mm in front of the stove and use silicon to fix it down to the old hearth and wooden floor. Make sure the old hearth is sound if not make good and level with the timber flooring using levalling compound or cement and sharp sand give it a few days to dry before using the silicon
