Cracks on party wall

by Houseplans2020 » Fri Nov 13, 2020 6:52 pm

Hi, we have large cracks on our internal party wall with our neighbour. It has gone all the way through to the other side. Both our neighbours and us would like to get this fixed but they would like to go down the insurance route and we would like to investigate first if it needs underpinning or if it’s just a matter of stitching. We’d rather avoid insurance due to having a mark on our property ongoing.
Does anyone know if when work to a party wall is required and one party decides to go down the insurance route, does the other as well or could we avoid insurance company and fix at our own cost?
I’ve attached a photo of the crack. We took the plaster off to expose the brickwork underneath. Any thoughts on how bad this crack is?

Hi houseplans2020
You have a serious crack indicating ground movement. Suggest you join with your neighbour to put remedial work through your insurance companies. You will need to get a structural surveyor in for advice, this crack is beyond a DIY repair.
