Floating floor and draughts coming from under skirting

by MikeH1 » Sat Nov 14, 2020 4:52 pm

The floor in our property is block & beam, with 2 layers of insulation board on top. Above this is a floating floor of T&G chipboard. The floor finish is solid wood flooring screwed to the floating floor.
The difficulty we’re having is draughts from under the skirting board. In addition to radiators we use a log burner for heating, the downside of which is that the log burner draws cold air effectively making the draughts at floor level worse.
I’ve tried using both silicone sealant and expanding foam tape to seal the gaps below the skirting boards but because a floating floor moves these haven’t proved effective.
Has anyone else had this issue or have thoughts on how I can approach this?

Hi mikeh1
Ideally you should remove the skirting and fill the gap exposed with expanding foam. You will need to buy a gun and foam can - do not try using the foam can with the flexible nozzle.

Hi Stoneyboy,
Appreciate you taking the time to reply
I was thinking along the same lines of removing the skirting boards and filling the gap.
But, the gap is there to allow the floor to expand and contract and I wasn't sure if expanding foam would be too rigid once in place. To my mind it really needs something that is compressible but can also expand
Cheers Mike

Hi mikeh1
Expanding foam is flexible and is ideal for your application.
