Damp and mould incorner of PVC ceiling

by Fipdip » Sun Dec 27, 2020 12:22 am

I moved into a flat 3 years ago which had a new pvc false ceiling installed, not in panels but in one piece across the whole ceiling, with round led lights. Recently, in one corner, damp and mould has started to appear but I don't know how to get behind the pvc ceiling to have a look and solve the the problem. Advice appreciated.

You may find this has nothing to do with what is behind the PVC, but more of a ventilation issue. Have you sealed up any vents that were once in place? If so I would reopen the vents and clean off all the mould using a good mould remover. Give it some time and see if that solved the problem. Typically mould is caused by stale air with high humidity. Not having adequate ventilation will have humid air condensate on cold surfaces. Would also be a good idea to insulate the ceiling above the PVC. That will prevent the ceiling from getting too cold and causing condensation to occur.

Firstly, I can't get to the outside of the building because it's on the end wall of the buidling and I'm on the 4th floor. One possible cause I think is that a family of jackdaws have pecked through the insulation on the outside wall about that spot and have made a home for themselves. Secondly, how can I insulate behind the false ceiling when, as I said, I can't get behind it?
What I'd like to know is how do I remove the ceiling? Does it clip off somewhere, somehow?
