Wet patches and salt coming through wall

by Adamtunni » Sat Jan 30, 2021 3:34 pm

Hi,

This is my first time postings Nd hoping someone can help me. I'm getting these wet patches through on my wall. One wall is the back of the house, the other is adjoined to next door. No one seems to be able to give me the exact reason for the problem. A roofer looked and said my roof wasn't sealed at the ends, so it sat above next doors roof and that rain was blowing into the gap and getting into the brick work, which seems reasonable, but I don't have the same problem at the other side of the house. And since I had it filled with sand and cement, I'm still noticing fresh looking wet patches. Maybe it will take a while to fully dry out? I don't know when the roof was put up as I only bought the property a year ago, and there was no sign of the wet patches until about a month after I redecorated. I stripped it back, used damp blocker and repainted but it still came back. Does anyone have any experience of what it could be, and how I can fix it? I have attached a photo.

We cannot access the back of the house as there is only a 6" gap and then another row of houses starts.

Image attached (hopefully) website only seems to allow tiny photos. I have now cleaned the salt off, and i was planning on scraping all the p[aint off in the affected areas hoping it would allow the wall to breathe and dry out

Hi adamtunni
Are the blue walls masonry and if yes are they solid or cavity walls.

You'll have to excuse me but I'm very much an amateur.i think the back wall (on the right in the picture) is masonry as it's the back of our house. It is a Victorian terrace. The side wall is connected to next doors house, I've been to look in there house and in the same spots they have damp and wall paper peeling off.

Hi adamtunni
It looks like water is getting into the party wall and this can only be from above. Perhaps if you can photograph this area of the roof from outside we can then advise.
It also looks like water is getting into the rear wall, again it depends on the construction of the roof eaves. Again a photo of this area outside would be helpful.
Regards S
