Flashing on old timber framed house for pitched roof porch

by phandley146 » Sat Feb 13, 2021 4:15 pm

Hi
So we're thinking of adding a porch with a pitched roof onto an old traditional black and white timber framed house. The roof would span a vertical timber beam and the rendered infill panels either side. Presumably on the infill panels you would remove the render, do your soakers and step flashing as normal, and then make good the render. Question is, what do you do to waterproof the beam? The original timbers are 400 years old, so as you can imagine nothing is straight or square.
Cheers

Hi phandley146
If the rendering is sound you could just cut the flashing into this direct. The flashing would need to be pinned to the timbers with a suitable sealant behind the flashing. If the timbers are not already treated to make them waterproof you will have to do this to stop water getting behind the flashing.
