In the past I have coated my wooden garden furniture with solvent based furniture oil. I now want a change so I want to apply a semi matt garden paint which is water based. Am I okay to apply the garden paint straight onto the garden furniture or is some prep required. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Very doubtful you will have any success using a water based finish - you may be lucky with an oil based one.
