Adding Inhibitor to a Central Heating System All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

Hi, I want to top up the Inhibitor in my Gas Central Heating. I'm not sure what Inhibitor was used in the past and don't want to drain the system down. I watched a couple of YouTube Videos which shows an easy method of adding the Inhibitor through the towel rail

My question, can you mix Inhibitors, if you don't know what is in the system.

Provided you use one which is designed to be used with both aluminium and steel you should be ok.

Hi, thanks for your reply and help. I have just found tonight I have 2 Chrome towels rail which have pinhole leaks which need replaced. I have been losing pressure in my Combi boiler.

That’s a bit of a blow - once you have replaced them it may be worth pressurising the system before you add preservative chemicals.

Hi and thanks again, I'll take you advice on how to add the Inhibitor.

I have been reading up on the Internet about Chrome towel rails and they appear to cause a lot of problems with pin holing and rusting on the bottom of the rails. One on mine is only 4 years old and the second one around 10, although it was probably leaking for some time. I thought the wet grout on the floor was due to condensation.

The chrome layer on a towel rail can seal over inherent leaks in the underlying welding, best to use ones from known sources.
