3" x 3" posts and slatted screen advice for privacy screen

by Markyhud » Wed Jun 09, 2021 4:03 pm

I’ve just constructed an above fence privacy screen. It’s double slatted and fixed to the face of 75mm x 75mm fence posts. The posts are 500mm in ground with 1-2 bags of postcrete. (I realise it should be 600mm but digging was difficult). It was only meant to screen the decking area but now my wife wants it’s all along the fence.
The posts are solid at the bottom but there’s quite a bit of flex at the top. I’m a bit worried about the wind if I’m adding another 3 lengths. Should I add some horizontal rails/noggins to act as a brace across the 180cm span between posts? I know 100mm x 100mm posts will not flex but they are going to look too chunky. I did think about possibly using 75mm x 100mm but would rather stick to 75mm ones as they are readily available. Any thoughts please? Thanks in advance.

Hi markyhud
It looks like your effective fence height will be around 2m.
3x3 posts aren’t really man enough in windy conditions. If the posts do break you could always add concrete Spurs as a repair + strengthening solution.
