There’s a box on the wall just outside the bathroom in a house I have just moved into. Can anybody tell me what it might be for (see picture)? Thank you.

The "box" you have is a timer (That model is obsolete) as it is outside the bathroom I would guess it operates underfloor heating.
The only real way to find out what it controls is to turn it "ON" and observe what happens, if nothing does happen the only other thing to do is to follow/trace the cables.
