Hi people. I'm new to the forum so apologies if this is in the wrong place. We're having a loft conversion done, can anyone with experience of structural steels tell me if this set up is acceptable?
The steel supporting the dormer roof beams has been inserted into the wall at one side resting on steel plates.
The other side is a chimney stack which I understand can't be cut into.
The builders have used a timber post to support the beam here instead. The builder has assured me this is normal and follows the structural engineer's plan (which I haven't seen and don't have a copy of). He could very well be right but my instinct says no.
I've attached a couple of photos to help explain.
The post is supported on new rafters directly above a supporting wall.
