Joist weight for Installing Insulation

by Roverholic » Sun Nov 07, 2021 5:26 pm

Hi. I want to install insulation in my lift space of my 1880's terraced house. How can I be reassured that the joists will be good to work on while I install this? I ain't particularly heavy at 11st and know I should use a board over a few joists but last thing I need is to break the ceiling haha. The joists are 3"x1.5". Any advice kindly received. Rob

Hi roverholic
Whether the ceiling will take you weight will depend on the centre of the joists, how much woodworm decay has taken place, span of joists ie between supporting walls below and how well you will distribute you load on the joists. All you can do is to try and if there is a lot of flexing look at ways to reinforce the joists.
Regards S
