Against-the-wall toilet can't be placed against wall? Drainage and wastage systems and plumbing help, advice and answers

First time post and would like advice.

When replacing the floor in the bathroom we decided to also get rid of the boxed-in cistern (that always needed repairs and the box dismantling to fix).

So we asked a plumber to install a combined cistern toilet against the wall. They ran the feed pipe along the back wall, and that means there's not enough space for the back of the toilet to go over the drain outlet (there's no cut out for the feed to go through the porcelain at the side). They installed the toilet forward of the outlet, further into the room that the old one.

Plumber said it's better away from the wall as this type of model is difficult to maintain without dismantling and suggested boxing in the back.

So my two questions are:

1. If they brought the feed pipe through the stud wall behind, could the toilet then be placed back against the wall, and over the outlet? So saving space? (Wall would be tiled after)

2. Is my plumber right in suggesting a boxed-in back would make repairs and maintenance a lot easier?

If the cold feed can be brought through the stud wall there is no reason not to move it back to the wall.
Providing you do not tile down onto the cistern lid there is no problem servicing the valve and flush diaphragm.
There are numerous pan connectors that would work.
