Hi, can I add membrane and battens over old render on top half of property, and then hang tiles? Hoping to avoid hacking off old render.

Hi bpbpbp,
That should be fine but fit a breathable underslaters felt under the battens. Suggest you drill through the battens and into the masonry and use something like Fischer drive fixings. This will limit the amount of rendering that is loosened.
