Seal inside of built in wardrobe to stop musty smell?

by diydweeb » Tue Feb 15, 2022 4:47 pm

Hi,

Complete noob here so please talk to me as if I’m five. We bought a house with built in wardrobes all made from MDF, which isn’t sealed/varnished. It’s a fairly newish built wardrobe, but the one nearest the external wall has a sweet musky smell that is driving me insane.

There’s no visible signs of damp or mould, I’ve aired it out and wiped it down, tried baking soda etc, but still it remains.

Would sanding back and sealing the MDF help? If so, what would I need? A sanding tool? What kind of sealant? Literally happy to take direct brands etc.

I’ve also looked into lourve doors to improve ventilation but would need them cut to size I imagine?

Any advice welcome!

Thanks,
Sarah

Hi diydweeb,
Sealing the inside will achieve nothing, you will probably have to remove the wardrobe carcase and assess the external wall condition.
