How to fix wooden panels to old concrete window box

by Clearfish » Sat Feb 19, 2022 11:57 am

I’m a complete novice when it comes to DIY, so if anyone has any advice I’d be very grateful. We have an old concrete window box that we wish to cover with wood. We’ll either use decking boards or 22mm thick treated timber but I’m struggling to decide how to fix it to the concrete. The window box is 214cm wide and 24cm high, old and ugly. Would anyone recommend drilling and fixing the wood directly into the existing or make a frame style wooden structure that could rest on the concrete box. Images attached and any help would be welcomed.

Hi clearfish,
Suggest you use stainless bolts to fix the boards to the window boxes. Possibly worth using nylon washers between the concrete and the wood to allow for movement.

Hi clearfish,
Be careful when drilling through the concrete trough, use a freshly sharpened masonry drill and no hammer action.
