Door Lining / Frame installation Advice

by bokvis » Tue Mar 01, 2022 7:37 pm

Hi

Appreciate any help with below please

I have an opening between a 100mm thermalite block wall and plastered brick wall that requires a door frame with casing. I already have the door circ 760mm

Please note
Opening 890mm
Will be dot and dab with 12.5mm plasterboard

Questions
- can I attach door lining directly to thermalite blockwork or would I require I.e 25mm timber frame
- what size door casing do I need - 148mm if I take dot and dab plus plasterboard allowance
- what is the preferred frame - rebate or not

And lastly
Any recommendations where to purchase

Many thanks for any assistance or guidance offered

Hi bokvis,
Yes you can fix direct into the thermalites but use long screws and plugs buried deep into the wall. You could use a rebated frame which may take up the difference between the door and the masonry opening. Otherwise use a door lining and pack this out to give the right opening size.

Hi

Many thanks for the response. I will dot and dab the plaster board so the rebate door frame / lining needs to be circ. 146mm width. Is that correct ?

I have looked on Howdens, Wicks, Travis but cannot see anything this size - are my calculations wrong as surely this must be fairly standard for internal door frames with dot and dab plaster board.

A bit confusing - am I looking at the correct suppliers for the size I require?

Many thanks again

Hi Stoneyboy

Thank you for the advice. I think the easiest would be just to sell the 760mm door and install a 838 frame and door and pack out as suggested.

It is just the width of the frame or lining that needs to be approx 145mm to allow for dot and dab plasterboard- do I merely add on a bit of timber to the frame / lining as I cannot seem to find from merchants I.e Howdens, Travis

Hi bokvis,
Even if you use a rebated frame and use an 838 door you will still be far too narrow for the opening. Suggest you fit door lining on both sides of the frame and pack out the remaining gap.
