Please Help!! Mixer shower has too much cold water getting to it

by Beaker » Thu Mar 03, 2022 3:48 pm

Hey Team,

Ive just moved into a new house and the shower is too cold unless i flush the toilet or run the cold tap. This seems to remove some of the cold water from the shower system allowing the water to get barely hot enough but obviously pulls a lot of the pressure from it.

This the shower mixer thats installed.

Please help!!

Thanks in advance

Hi beaker,
The pressures on your hot and cold supplies are not balanced. I assume you have a combi boiler for heating and hot water with mains fed cold throughout the house.
If this is correct you could fit a pressure reducer in the cold feed to your shower.

Thanks so much!

That sounds exactly like what i need!

It also doesn't sounds entirely like something i could do myself. Given its a mixer with no access to the pipes in the wall, would it be best to install the pressure reducer way down the line or does it need to be done right next to the shower itself?

Thanks again for any info

Funnily enough just had a thought in the shower!

Is it possible to get something that pushes more hot water to the shower rather than reducing the cold and overall pressure?

Hi beaker,
Your combi boiler will have a pressure reducer fitted to it to protect the boiler from high mains pressure. Assuming this has been set by the boiler person there is little you can do to increase the hot water pressure.
You can fit a pressure reducer in your mains in or at any point in the pipe work feeding the shower. Hopefully you have a 25mm blue pipe coming into your house so use a pressure reducing valve of the same size or you may suffer from flow problems.
