Multiple window unit failures in 10 years

by Bensnan » Mon May 09, 2022 10:37 am

I had all my windows replaced in 2009. Since then I have had 10 misted units. The guarantee covered 7 of these but since then I have had another three that have failed. The installer also manufactured the glass units but that part of the business no longer exists.
Although l‘ve been offered replacements at cost + labour I think there must have been a fault in the manufacture. Is 10 failed units in 13 years excessive? If so what can I do? Thank you.

Hi bensnan,
Presumably the offer of replacements is from the original supplier, if yes, your best option is to accept their offer.
The issue may be poor components, manufacture or poor installation so it would be difficult to pin the problem on one organisation/individual.

Thank you. The glass units were manufactured and installed by the same company. However proving fault would be hard. I’m just concerned now I’ll get a fair price as I’ve no idea what replacement units and labour cost. Thanks again.

Hi bensnan,
If you search online for DGUs and use the measurements of the existing units you should get a good idea of cost - you don’t need to be exact on the dimensions.
If your windows are upvc or aluminium expect a labour cost of £80 - £100 per unit unless you are in London where you can double this. This assumes the windows have internal beading so replacement can be carried out from inside.
If you have timber windows it will be a lot more, again double the prices above,
Regards S ..

Thank you. Only just found your reply, it was in my junk folder. I’ve sent approximate measurements to the installer but as yet have had no reply. Your information will help me to get an idea of what to expect.
