Hello, I’ve put back the stairs banisters at my house. The newel post had been shortened. The guy who has came to do it has put the new newel post to the ceiling and has cited regulations and that the planks on need to be supported. It’s the ranch style banister that has been put in.

There is no support in the centre as I’ve seen on other similar stairs.
I’m not keen on the ceiling high newel post as hardly any stairs have this now and have asked if it can be shortened. Has anyone else experienced this and are newel posts to the ceiling still happening?

I don’t recall there being any regulations requiring the use of floor to ceiling newel posts but if the newel post is a retrofit job then the only way to meet deflection requirements may be a separate full height newel.
