Hi everyone

I'm sorting out the extractor fan for the bathroom, i've put an inline fan in the loft and am just sorting out the ducting, but my electrician is unwell at the moment and would probaby not be able to come along to do the wiring until after christmas. I was wondering if it would be a really bad idea to run a cable down through the ceiling of the spare bedroom and put a plug on the end? Obviously not a recommended way of doing it, but is it a horribly dangerous way? just as a temporary measure?

How will anyone turn it on/off?
You can't have a shower, then come into the bathroom to turn off the fan.
You could mount a pull cord in the bathroom ceiling, and wire that to the fan, and do put a 3A fuse in the plug, a plug in RCD would be good, unless your consumers unit already has one.

Turning it on and off isn't a problem as it'll only be for a few weeks. Plug it in to socket in spare bedroom before shower/unplug afterwards . It was just knowing that it's ok to put a plug on the end, as it says in the installation instructions that it is "for fixed wiring only. A flexible cord must not be used" Just wanted to check i'm not doing anything too dangerous.

You will be doing something dangerous, people will come out of the bathroom all wet, go to switch it off and............. all because you didn't install a pull cord light switch.

Electricity does not say "oops, sorry, it kills without question"

It's just two adults in the house. Never been in a habit of switching things on and off in different rooms while i'm naked and dripping wet!! We'd plug it in, shower, dry off, get dressed, and then unplug it. I think it's normal to leave it to over-run for a while anyway, to clear the humid air from the ducting? So if that's the only risky bit, then i guess i can go ahead?

The best way to prevent an accident is before it happens.
Something happens and you "must" turn off the fan, oops too late.
But what you choose to do is up to you, I would install a pull cord.
